#1. District 2, Thao Dien Mexican Restaurant Simple Place Review
Simple Place, a Mexican restaurant, is located near the British International School in Thao Dien, District 2, Ho Chi Minh City. Despite its shabby appearance, this restaurant is popular with Westerners living nearby because it serves authentic Mexican food at reasonable prices.
The restaurant's interior is more spacious than it appears from the outside, with both indoor and outdoor seating. If you're sensitive to heat, grabbing a table inside is a good option. On a nice day, the spacious outdoor seating area is more appealing than the stuffy indoor space.
As expected from Thao Dien, where prices are high, alcohol prices are generally high. A glass of Tiger Draft Beer was a bit disappointing at 55,000VND.
For my first meal, I ordered the Ground Beef Burrito. The thick burrito was cut in half and served on a plate, which was both pleasing to the eye and easy to eat.
It was filled with cabbage, salsa, cheese, sour cream, and minced beef, all wrapped in a soft tortilla. It was fresh and mild, delicious on its own, but, true to Mexican food, it was even more delicious when topped with chili sauce for a spicy kick.
For my second meal, I ordered two tacos: Deep Fried Fish and Brirria Beef. Simple Place's tacos range in price from 50,000VND to 85,000VND.
The Brirria Beef is topped with birria beef, cheese, pickled onions, jalapenos, and cilantro, all on a soft tortilla, served with birria sauce. The tender, simmered beef, the flavor of the cilantro, and the refreshing tang of the pickled onions and jalapenos combine to create a truly satisfying meal.
Deep Fried Fish is one of Simple Place's most popular menu items. I chose a crispy tortilla, and it was overflowing with lettuce, fried fish, avocado, spicy mayonnaise, salsa, cheese, sour cream, and more. It was incredibly filling, with a refreshing yet complex flavor.
#2. Mexican Restaurant Simple Place - Menu
Simple Place, a popular Mexican restaurant in Thao Dien, offers decent Mexican food at reasonable prices, considering the neighborhood's cost of living. However, alcoholic beverages are quite expensive, which is a bit of a shame. Beyond Mexican cuisine, the restaurant is also renowned for its delicious Italian-style pizza and pasta, making it a great place to visit in groups and order a variety of dishes.
I visited for dinner alone on Thursday evening and ordered as follows:
Deep Fried Fish Taco: 80,000VND
Brirria Beef Taco: 85,000VND
Ground Beef Burrito: 115,000VND
Tiger Draft Beer: 55,000VND x 2 EA = 110,000VND
Including the 8% general VAT and 10% alcohol VAT, the total came to 423,400VND. While the alcohol prices were a bit disappointing, Simple Place was a satisfying meal, offering authentic Mexican food at a reasonable price. They also make excellent Italian-style pizza and pasta, making it a great place to visit when you're craving both Mexican and Italian cuisine.
