#1. District 2, Thao Dien Mexican Restaurant El Camino Taqueria Review
Mexican restaurant El Camino Taqueria is located in a corner of an alley in Thao Dien, District 2. Compared to other Mexican restaurants in the area, it is generally cheaper and the taste is good, so it is famous among foreigners living nearby as a good value taco restaurant. It is a bit fusion, so it may be divisive to say that it is not original Mexican food, but I think it is a charming unique characteristic of this place.

It is a small, cozy, casual restaurant with a counter and kitchen on the first floor and tables for eating on the second floor. The store itself is clean, but it is hard to find any Mexican-style points in the interior.

I visited alone for dinner on a Saturday evening and sat at the balcony table on the second floor. There are two tables on the balcony, and although the view is not great, I recommend sitting here because you can enjoy a meal while feeling the cool breeze and looking at the night view of Thao Dien.

I ordered Huda beer, which was having a 1+1 event to go with the tacos. It is a central regional beer produced in Hue, using Danish brewing techniques. It is a clean and simple lager that goes well with spicy Mexican food.

The first dish I ordered was Chips & Guacamole. It was a basket of crispy chips made from delicious corn tortillas and refreshing guacamole. It was boring to eat it like that without chili sauce.

I needed some spicy flavor, so I asked the staff for some chili sauces, and they gave me salsa verde(green) and salsa roja(red). They were both slightly spicy and sour, but salsa verde was a bit spicier.

It definitely tasted a lot better with the chili sauce on top than just the guacamole on the chips. It was a little different from the spicy and tangy original Mexican food I was expecting, but it wasn't bad.

I ordered three tacos that are famously delicious in this restaurant: Tropical Shrimp Taco, Baja Seabass Fish Taco, and Shredded Kalbi Beef Taco. I usually need to eat three tacos for one meal to feel full.

The Tropical Shrimp Taco had fried shrimp, pineapple salsa, sriracha mayo, and feta cheese in a soft tortilla. The chewy texture of the shrimp in the crispy batter and the sweet, sour, and spicy flavors combined to make it the most delicious of the three tacos I ordered.

The Baja Seabass Fish Taco had beer-battered fish, red cabbage salad, ranch sauce, and shallot flakes. This was also delicious beyond my expectations, but I was a little disappointed that it wasn't spicy enough. The salsa verde added a nice kick to it.

Shredded Kalbi Beef Taco is a taco with shredded beef, kimchi, and sriracha mayo sauce. The combination of beef, spicy sauce, and kimchi makes it a far cry from the original Mexican dish, but it was still delicious.

El Camino Taqueria is a charming and popular restaurant in Thao Dien that serves decent Mexican food at reasonable prices, making it a great place to visit when you’re craving tacos. Of course, it’s a bit of a fusion of Mexican food, so some people may not like it, but that’s what makes it so appealing.
